San Antonio (September 22, 2008) - With the support of Microsoft executives and San Antonio community leaders, Microsoft Corp.officially opened its latest data center in northwest San Antonio today. The $550 million, 477,000- square-foot data center distinguishes Microsoft's commitment to customers and the city, as well as the company's confidence in building its next generation business model to support the growing customer demand for Microsoft's Online and Live Services throughout the region and worldwide.
"Our community is pleased to join Microsoft as it officially opens the doors of the San Antonio data center," said San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger. "Microsoft's innovative spirit and sustainable business practices mesh well with our community. This next-generation facility reaffirms San Antonio's future in technology and our overall economic development. "
"We continue to see the growth of new data centers and expect to attract hardware and software companies that support the industry," stated Mario Hernandez, president of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation. "This Microsoft facility insures that San Antonio will be a force in the growth of the internet business."
The data center, described as the place "where the Internet lives," will house large-scale, worldwide Web services for Microsoft's Online and Live Services businesses. With the growth of audio and video applications, social Web sites, mobile devices and other Internet demands, data centers are becoming more and more important as companies strive to increase online computing support to provide users with enhanced Web services in a cost effective and efficient manner.
"The data center not only provides additional capacity for our Online and Live Services customers, it also showcases building and operations innovations that reflect the industry's leading environmental practices," said Debra Chrapaty, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Global Foundation Services. "One of the unique features of the San Antonio area is their great recycled water systems. As part of our commitment to the environment, we're using approximately 8 million gallons of water (per month) from this system for our data center cooling needs."
For the past four years Microsoft has experienced rapid growth in our Online and Live Services, and we expect that growth to continue. To meet these increasing needs in a manageable and sustainable way, Microsoft focuses on smart growth and efficiency in its data center operations and is committed to being a leader in responsibly building data center capacity for the future.
"Microsoft's decision to strengthen its presence in San Antonio has already greatly benefited our local economy by creating hundreds of construction jobs for this facility. Our city's partnership with the industry leader on this venture has clearly proven that San Antonio can play a significant role in Microsoft's bright future," said Congressman Charlie Gonzalez (TX-20). "As Microsoft continues to lead the way for innovation, and other companies follow in their footsteps, I look forward to their continuing local efforts and the resulting boosts to San Antonio's economic health," he added.
San Antonio was specifically chosen for its continued commitment to growing next-generation businesses. Microsoft worked closely with the Economic Development Foundation and their partners to reach this mutual goal of bringing the power of thousands of servers in the data center to deliver online services to customers throughout the region and worldwide.
"Microsoft is thrilled to continue our long-term relationship with the San Antonio community, working together to build the area as a center of innovation," said Mike Manos, Microsoft's general manager of data center services for Global Foundation Services. "Microsoft looked at 31 variables in narrowing its site selection to San Antonio, including the availability of fiber optic networks, affordable energy rates, and work and life balance for our employees that the city offered."
The data center also reinforces Microsoft's commitment to the San Antonio community, as well as the entire state of Texas. Since 2003, the company donated and matched employee gifts totaling more than $50 million in cash, curriculum and software in the state of Texas and $4.7 million to San Antonio nonprofits. Most recently, Microsoft awarded to Alamo Area Community Information System (AACIS) a grant worth more than $450,600 in cash and software. AACIS is a community non-profit committed to providing computer data, computer information and computer literacy classes in English and Spanish.
